The Problem
Pork CRC commenced a national benchmarking project in 2009 with a group of producers from around the country. Run by Dr Rowan O’Hagan, the project was extremely successful in providing a forum for producers to compare their operations on an individual farm basis with others. The group was expanded to include New Zealand farms, and the six-monthly regional meetings and the annual meeting were well attended and very productive for those that attended.
In 2018, the project was passed onto Australian Pork Limited (APL) for administration and they proposed to systemise the gathering and analysis of the data as part of this process.
How we can help
It is proposed to develop the platform in partnership with industry groups, to utilise data gathered during the Pork CRC benchmarking project, and now residing with APL, as a baseline.
The system will allow producers of all sizes to have information relevant to the size and complexity of their operations and to make their business decisions based on the latest data in real time.
The centralised highly secure cloud platform would be available 24x7 to authorised users on an annual subscription basis ($/sow) and it proposed to ask APL to support these annual license costs as part of the levies received on a per pig basis.
how it will work
Leveraging the considerable investment that has been made in the Benchmarking project over the past ten years, the Pork Bench platform will provide producers with intuitive and actionable insights into their business.
Using uploads from existing recording systems or easy to use onscreen data entry, producers will have the ability to:
measure their business in real time against regional data
select key performance metrics to improve
model processes for maximum business benefit with easily identifiable and measurable Return on Investment (ROI) and track progress against the plan.
Future integration
Given the increasing availability of control systems for farm management though iOT, integrated with weather systems (BOM), temperature and feed sensors as well as water and air quality, waste management systems will allow producers to gain further insights into their farms and make more informed decisions for the future of their business.
